Here is a blurb about DubThon to help you understand why I started this campus-wide event and why it's dear to my heart. This is long, but good and I know you will enjoy reading it.
DubThon is a 6-hour dance marathon event benefiting Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center, our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Our organization’s goal is to make an emotional and financial impact on the patients and families who walk through the doors of Duke Children’s every single day. Dancers raise money throughout the year that goes directly to Duke Children’s Hospital, and these efforts are celebrated at our January culmination event. Throughout the event, participants have the opportunity to enjoy varying performances, dance their hearts out, and hear from our heroic children who are still alive today because of the hospital.
What's the reason I'm so passionate for this cause? I have been connected to Duke Children's hospital through my family and childhood friends. My little sister and cousin, Ally and Nikki, both are diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Ally has received treatment from Duke Children's Hospital multiple times for stomach ulcers. I have seen how fundraising benefits loved ones firsthand. Jackie, my close childhood friend was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 14. She had a tumor the size of a grapefruit on her pelvic bone. She had spots on her lungs. To remove the tumor she had to lose half a pelvic bone that couldn't be replaced. She went through a year of chemo and radiation through Duke Children's Hospital. I brought her about a dozen frozen bananas from the state fair that year because they were her favorite and I knew she wouldn't make it without them. She is a survivor today, a nurse practitioner at Duke Children's Hospital, and actually just got married this past summer! These women are my inspiration for strength.
All the money that is raised goes to where it is needed most: it funds pivotal research, clinical care, advocacy, and family support programs that aids children in this region and around the world. The DubThon event itself creates an environment for sick children to feel like super stars from the support of the Wilmington student body and community. I want to give these children and family happiness and hope.
I want to raise $1,000 on my own for strong kids today that were like Ally, Nikki, and Jackie. I am about $600 away. Contribute to my page up until next Saturday, January 27th, at 8 pm in UNCW's Burney Center when the fundraiser will be over.
Interested in coming? IHere's a peak at what the event was like last year!
